Major John Robert Black was born on March 8, 1931 in Rye, New York to William and Gertrude Black. He was one of eight siblings: including Vince, Tom, Carol, Chuck, Jim, and Barbra to live in their house at 43 New St.. John attended Catholic Elementary School before entering Rye High School. While in High School, John played many sports including Track and Football. John excelled in the pole vault, and at a meet in May of 1948, he outstanded the crowd by being the first person in school history to break the five minute mile. As a high school student Black had brilliant athletic abilities also actively taking part in football, in which he played center. He was recognized many times by the local newspaper, the Rye Chronicle, for his excellence in sports. John graduated from Rye High School in 1949 and later that year would enlist as a private in the United States Marine Corps, where he would work in recon operations for both the Korean and Vietnam war.

John Black had eight siblings  - I will send their names
Also notable is that there were six boys most of whom were veterans.
Travis, Vincent, Charles, James, Thomas, Carol, Marion and Barbara who is my mother.
