Arthur J. Gibson

Arthur J. Gibson was born in Buffalo, N.Y., May 2 1911 to Ida Bourkney, age 18, and Arthur J. Gibson, age 19. In Rye his family lived at 16 Ridgeland Manor and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

Arthur served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II and recipient of the Bronze Star.

HE SERVED IN THE ASIATIC-PACIFIC THEATER OF OPERATIONS WITH THE 105TH FIELD ARTILLERY BATTALION, 27TH INFANTRY DIVISION, ASIATIC-PACIFIC THEATER AS A FIELD ARTILLERY UNIT COMMANDER IN THE EASTERN MANDATES, WESTERN PACIFIC, SOUTHERN PHILIPPINE ISLANDS, MAKIN, GILBERT ISLANDS, SAIPAN AND OKINAWA. AWARDED THE ASIATIC-PACIFIC THEATER CAMPAIGN RIBBON WITH 6 BRONZE SERVICE STARS, AMERICAN THEATER CAMPAIGN RIBBON, AMERICAN DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL, BRONZE STAR MEDAL AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL.

Arthur married Eleanor (Noree) Connor and they had two sons and two daughters.

He was retired from the Army National Guard and from the phone company in New York City. Arthur was a member of the Pioneers of America, the Knights of Columbus of Old Saybrook, and the Westbrook Lodge Elks. Formerly of Port Chester and Rye, N.Y, he had lived in Westbrook since the early 1970' s.


Arthur J. Gibson, 69, of 12 Shailer Drive, Westbrook CT, died Saturday, February 21, 1981 at the Shoreline Clinic after a short illness.

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Noreen (O'Connor) Gibson of Westbrook; two sons, Arthur Gibson Jr. of Long Island, N.Y., and Donald Gibson of New Jersey, and two daughters, Mrs. Diane Gillies of New York and Miss Artene Gibson of Clinton.

A mass of Christian burial was held at St. Mark's H.C. Church, Westbrook. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery, Port Chester, N.Y.
