Catherine Capel Smith was born on November 24, 1920, in New Rochelle, New York, her father, Charles, was 31, and her mother, Frank, was 29. She married Shepherd Monson Holcombe in August 1945 in New York. They had one child during their marriage. She died on September 6, 1993, in Hartford, Connecticut, at the age of 72. In Rye his family lived on King Street. Catherine enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Smith of Port Chester, N. Y., announce the engagement of their daughter, Ensign Catherine Capel Smith, USNR, to Lieutenant Shepherd Monson Holcombe of the Army Air Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Good-;(au?hter, Fred-win Holcombe of Spring Street.

Miss Smith is a graduate of the Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, Pa., and, of Bryn Mawr College in the class of 1942. A granddaughter of the late Mrs. James T. Capel of Pittsburgh. Pa., and Port Chester, N. Y.. she was commissioned on August 24 at Nonnampion, Mass., ana is, now stationed at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla. Lieutenant Holcombe is a graduate of Loomis School and was graduated from Yale University in the class of 1943. He received his commission on May 11 at, New York University. He is a grandson of the late John M. Holcombe. for many Gar-years president of the Phoenix Mu- Wil-tual Life Insurance Company, and! also a direct descendant of Major-1 General Seth Pomeroy of the Revo lutionary Army in whose memory the Sons of the Revolution have monument at Pcekakill erected a N. Y,

Catherine S. Holcombe, 72, of West Hartford, died Monday (Sept. 6) at Hartford Hospital.

She was born November 24, 1920 in New Rochelle, N.Y., the daughter of the late Charles C. and Frank (Capel) Smith, and lived in the Hartford area for 40 years. Catherine was a 1942 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, and In 1943, she received a degree In Metero-logy from N.Y.U.

She was a Lt. J.G. serving In the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Catherine will be remembered for her unconditional love, generosity, and kindness, for her unpretentious humor and down-to-earthiness, for her wisdom and natural dignity, her courage and brightness.

Catherine was survived by her son, Shepherd M. Holcombe, Jr. of West Hartford; two daughters, Anne S. Holcombe of Hebron, and Emily G. Holcombe of Stanford; her brother, Charles C. Smith of Greenwich.
