George Casino was born in New York in 1908. In Rye his family lived at 27 High Street. George enlisted in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Witnessed Japanese Surrender

George Casino, a U.S. Navy seaman who was aboard the battleship USS Missouri at Tokyo Bay during the Japanese surrender ending World War II. died Saturday of a heart seizure at United Hospital in Port Chester. He was 78 and had lived in Rye.

He was born Jan. 11, 1908, to Salvatore and Raflaela DiBuona Casino in Port Chester, where he attended public schools. In 1927, he married Mary Sarsorito of Rye at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic. Church in Mamaroneck. The couple made their home in Rye. After working for the Russell. Burdsall & Ward Bolt and Nut Co. in Port Chester and an arms manufacturer in Bridgeport. Ct, Mr, Casino was drafted into the US. Navy in 1942. He was assigned to the Missouri after basic training. ''He was in all the major campaigns in the Pacific, including the battle of Guam and the battle of Iwo Jima.'' said George Casino Jr. of Rye. a son. His said Mr. Casino was on board the Missouri on Sept 2, 1945, when the Japanese surrendered to Gen. Douglas Mae Arthur in Tokyo Bay.

After the war. Mr. Casino took a Job as a waiter at the Westchester Country Club In Harrison. He retired about eight years ago. ''He was a firm believer in Rye.'' said Jeanette Gray of Rye. a daughter. ''He used to meet hit. Mends at McCulough's Pharmacy on Purchase Street and they would talk about Rye and current events.'' :,, Mr. Casino was a member of American Legion Post 90 in Mamaroneck. and attended annual reunions of the Association of the Battleship Missouri. He was also a parishioner at the Church of Resurrection Roman Catholic Church in Rye. ' '

In addition to his wife, son and daughter. Mr. Casino fat survived by a brother. Michael of Banning. Calif, a sister. Florence Jaworski of Port Chester, two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, A brother. Joseph, and a sister. Lillian Pacello. died before him.
