Gregory M. Reilly

Gregory M Reilly was born in 1923 in New York, his father, John, was 32 and his mother, Estelle, was 29. He had two brothers and five sisters. In Rye his family lived at 946 Boston Post Road. Gregory attended the Resurrection Parochial School and was graduated from Iona School in New Rochelle. He also attended Fordham School of Business Administration, which he left to enlist in the 165th Infantry Regiment in 1942.Gregory served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Gregory Reilly Commissioned
Gregory M. Reilly, son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Reilly, 946 Post Road, has been commissioned a second lieutenant in tne Army of the United States. He completed the Officer Candidate Course at the Infantry School Fort Benning, Ga. Lieut. Reilly has been spending the past week with his parents and left yesterday for Camp Wheeler, Va.

Gregory was promoted and served as served as a captain in the 104th Infantry Division during World War II.

The division saw almost 200 days of fighting in northwestern Europe as it fought through France, Netherlands, Belgium, and western Germany, fighting back several fierce German counterattacks as it advanced through the theater throughout late 1944 and 1945.

This was the only combat duty that the 104th Infantry Division has served during its history. At the end of the fighting on 7 May 1945 (V-E Day), this division was in central Germany opposite the troops of its allies from the Soviet Army.

On his return from the service, he became vice-president and general manager of Diplomat Food Products, Inc. In 1950, at the age of 28, Frater Reilly entered the Franciscan Seminary at Callicoon. N. Y.

He received the habit of the Franciscan Order of the Friars Minor in August 1953, then completed his year of novitiate and was professed in September 1954, at which time he took his first solemn vows. For the last year and a half he had been pursuing his studies toward ordination at the college and monastery of St. Francis in Rye Beach, New Hampshire.

Frater Ronan Francis Reilly, I.O.F.M., the former Gregory Mulqueen Reilly, died April 13 , 1956 after a long illness in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Brighton, Mass. Frater Reilly, who was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Reilly of New York City, formerly of Rye, was 33 years of age.

At the time of his death, Besides his parents, he was survived by a brother, Myles G. Reilly, and by four sisters. Mrs. Lee Malone of Houston, Texas; Mrs. Peter D. Kieman, Jr. of Albany. N. Y., and Mrs. James J. Beha and Miss Madeleine H. Reilly of New York City. Another brother, Captain John Sheridan Reilly, was killed in action in World War II.

A solemn funeral mass was offered at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, 135 West 31 Street in New York City

thank you for this special memory. Greg was my mother Macy Ann Reilly Behas twin brother, With the Reilly family, my  mother "Sanny"  grew up in Rye, moved to NYC for many years, and returned there with my dad in 1974, living at 43 Island Drive for 40 years. Rye has been an important part of our family history, and I appreciate the efforts to create these memories of its many veterans. So happy that my nephew Jim is living in Rye now!
