Herbert D. Lancaster


Herbert DeRieux Lancaster was born on November 12, 1903, in New York City, New York, to Mary Livingston Bosher, age 32, and Edwin Williams Lancaster, age 38. He was raised and educated in New York City.

Herbert married to Elizabeth Singer in Manhattan, New York, on November 11, 1926, when he was 22 years old. They would have two children and were divorced on March 11, 1937, in Reno, Nevada, after 10 years of marriage.

Herbert was a career investment banker working in New York City. He married Elizabeth Lovejoy Treman in Manhattan, New York, on March 5, 1941, when he was 37 years old.

In Rye he, Elizabeth and his son John lived on Grandview Ave and were members of Christ's Church. The Lancaster's were socially prominent and Herbert was an expert squash and tennis player of the Apawamis Club.

Herbert served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was commissioned a lieutenant on February 10, 1942

In April of that year he was transferred from Newport RI to Corpus Christi, Texas. His wife and son joined him at his new station. Herbert served in the South Pacific before receiving his discharge on July 21, 1944.

For some time the family split time in Rye and Woodstock, VT. By 1950 Herbert had retired from investment banking and retired fulltime to Vermont.

Herbert DeRieux Lancaster died on April 9, 1975, in Woodstock, Vermont, when he was 71 years old.
