John J. McCabe was born Nov. 17, 1910, in Rye to Peter and Catherine Shaughnessy McCabe and was educated in Rye public schools. He had four sisters: Anna, Catherine, Helen and Margaret and a brother Peter.

In Rye his family lived at 23 Hewlett Street and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. John enlisted in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army in World War II.

During World War II, John served as a technical sergeant in Gen. George Patton's Third Army in the Rhineland and Central Europe

Under Patton, the Third Army landed in Normandy during July 1944 and would go on to play an integral role in the last months of the war in Europe, closing the Falaise Pocket in mid-August, and playing the key role in relieving the siege of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in December, a feat regarded as one of the most notable achievements in the war. The rapid offensive action and speed that Patton called for became actions which brought the Third Army wide acclaim in the campaign.

After returning from the service, John settled in Port Chester. He was a machinist for many years with Port Chester Aluminum Foundry in the Byram section of Greenwich, Conn. John retired when the company shut down in 1971.
