Louis Michael Pane

Louis M. Pennabene was born on October 16th, 1921 to parents Antonio and Anna Pennabene. Louis lived at 38 High Street in Rye, New York back when Rye was a small town with a population of 9,865. Louis's father owned this home and it was valued at $3,800 ($72,200 in today’s dollars).

Louis lived with his parents and four younger siblings, Vito, Rose, Carmela, and Anthony. At one point the family would shorten their name from Pennabene to Paen.

Louis went to Rye High School, class of 1939. He participated in a great many things, he was part of the Drivers’ Club, the Boxing Club, the Football team, the Track team, the Messenger club, “The Ivory Door” play, and the Golf team.

Louis attended Columbia University, then enlisted into the United States Marine Corps on August 20, 1942 and began his service the same year. He would serve as a Technical Sargent with the Marine Aircraft Group Eleven during WWII.

During World War II, MAG-11 participated in combat action in the Solomon Islands, New Britain, Palau, Central Pacific Areas, and the Philippines. At the close of World War II, MAG-11 was based on the island of Peleliu, Palaus Group, where it remained until January 1946.

Louis lived in Manville, NJ for 32 years before moving to California in 1976. He was active in the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Louis was a member of the Manville Elks Lodge and was active in Pop Warner football and the Little League. He worked for many years at the Veterans Administration Supply Depot in Hillsborough, NJ. Louis was transferred to the Bell, Calif., depot in 1976 and retired as its director in 1979.

Louis Michael Pane, 68, former Manville resident a former borough resident, died Aug. 30, 1990 at his home in San Diego, Calif. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Emily Pane; his mother; two brothers; two sisters; nine children; and 12 grandchildren.
