Richard R. Close


Richard Randolph Close was born on September 26, 1918, in Mount Vernon, New York, to Maude Ketchum Smith, age 31, and Stuart MacNaughton Close, age 33. He had a sister Nancy and a brother David.

In Rye his family lived at 10 Horton Street and were members of Christ's Church.

Richard was a graduate of Rye High School Class of 1938 attended Mount Herman School and North Eastern University.

Richard enlisted March 9, 1942 as a private in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Promoted to Corporal
Pvt. Richard R. Close of 10 Horton Street, attached to the headquarters detachment of the Fort Moultrie station complement, has been promoted to corporal technician. Corporal Close is on special duty with the Carolina Sub-Sector with headquarters in the Army and Navy Building, Charleston, S. C

He married Evelyn Doyen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Doyen, of Larchmont, on June 6, 1942, at St. John's Church in Larchmont. They would have three children during their marriage.

Richard would rise thru the ranks, attend OCS and be commissioned a 1st Lieutenant. He received his honorable discharge on February 6, 1946.

After the war Richard worked as field engineer for Fairchild Space and Defense and a technical engineer for NBC Television, New York City.

He was a member of the Horseshoe Harbor Yacht Club, Larchmont, N.Y.

Evelyn and Richard retired to Florida, they moved to DeLand from Ormond Beach in 1999.

Richard Randolph Close, 83, East Howry Avenue, DeLand, FL. died Monday, Oct 29, 2001.

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Evelyn; sons, Stuart, Katonah, N.Y., Robert, Carlsbad, Calif., Richard, Richfield, Conn.; brother, David, Wilton, Conn.; sister, Nancy Gibson, Amherst, Mass.; four grandchildren.
