He was a 1938 graduate of Dartmouth College as an English major. He served as an Army Staff Sergeant during World War II, landing at Omaha Beach 1944 on D-Day plus one with the 3204 QMSC Company A.

After over 30 years at Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance, he retired as Director of Special Promotions. He was an avid sportsman, excelling in tennis and skiing in his youth and loved to golf in later years. In retirement he enjoyed his cottage on Cape Cod with his wife and family and was active with many carpentry projects.
