Robert Reade

Robert Reade was born May 18, 1915, in Cedarhurst, N.Y., to Lee and Hilda Blum Reade. He moved to Rye in 1933 to live with his Aunt Genevieve and Uncle Richard and grew up with his cousin, Richard Reade, Jr.. In Rye his family lived at 43 Halstead Place and were members of Christs Church.

Robert graduated from Columbia University.in 1936.

He enlisted on December 15 1941 , one week after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Robert served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He commanded a PT Boat Squadron in the Mediterranean.

"Lieut. Reade's PT boats figured in many operations throughout the Mediterranean area. He was in the Tunisian campaign, the evacuation of Cape Bon, the invasion of Pantalleria and landings on the south coast of Sicily and in the Straits of Messina. These little torpedo-firing speed boats which creep up on the enemy and discharge their death-dealina: loads before their presence is hardly known played an effective part in the capture of Liparri Islands and in the landings at Salerno and Anzio. They also figured prominently in the invasion of Elba and offensive missions in Tyrrhenian and Liguraian Sea. " Rye Chronicle page 4 cont.

Robert was awarded the Bronze Star and Silver Star medals and the Croix de Guerre. The-full text of the Bronze Star citation follows:

“For meritorious service as Division Commander of a group of PT Boats attached to Motor Torpedo Squadron Fifteen disembarking raiding parties behind enemy lines in the Western Mediterranean from November 1943 to June 1944."

"Operating in heavily mined water, Under constant patrol by hostile vessels Lieutenant Reade commanded his units skillfully and with daring aggressiveness successfully carrying out more than ten landing operations on closely guarded shores."

“By his resourceful and determined leadership and splendid tactical ability Lieutenant Reade contributed materially to the success of the Allied forces in their sustained drive against the enemy and upheld the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service"

Alter the war Robert helped found an organization for PT boat officers called Peter Tare Inc., and he served for several years on the board of directors. He married Doris Hughes on Nov. 27, 1948, in Southern Pines, N.C. .

Robert was on the board of directors of the Rye YMCA in the 1940s and 1950s. He was a member of the Apawamis Club and the American Yacht Gub and was a parishioner or Christ's Church, all in Rye. Robert also had homes in West Falmouth, Mass., and Vero Beach, Fla. .

He was the vice president and comptroller of Julius Wile and Sons, wine and liquor importers, Robert retired in 1975. He had worked for the company, which was in New York City and became a division of RJR Nabisco, for 37 years.

A tennis player, Robert won the National Senior Platform Tennis Championship in 1963.


Robert Reade, a longtime Rye resident, died of a heart attack Friday November 27,1992 at United Hospital Medical Center in Port Chester. He was 77.

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife of Rye; three daughters, Deborah Christensen of Park City, Utah, Nancy Everett of Rye and Jane Nissi of Wellesley Hills, Mass.; a brother, Alan Lee Reade of Bloomsfield Hills, Mich.; and eight grandchildren.
