BIOGRAPHY

Thomas O. Hagele

Thomas O. Hagele was born an identical twin at United Hospital on Aug 2 1923 to Frederick and Catherine Norton Hagele. His father was born in Germany and his mother was born in New York. Thomas and his seven siblings were all born in New York. In Rye his family lived at 30 Elm Place and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. Thomas attended Rye public schools graduating from Rye High School in 1941.

As a dutiful American citizen, Thomas entered into the military service to fight in World War II in January 1943. He served in Greenland in WWII and throughout Europe as a PFC and was discharged in December 1945. From 1941 until 1945, the United States established numerous and extensive facilities for air and sea traffic in Greenland, as well as radio beacons, radio stations, weather stations, ports, depots, artillery posts, and search-and-rescue stations.

Thomas was one of four ( James Hagele, George Hagele, William Hagele ) brothers to serve in the war.

Returns From Greenland Enjoys "Whistling Down Street"
Pfc. Tom Hagele finds much pleasure in just "whistling down Purchase Street" after twenty months in Greenland. Home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hagele of Purchase Street, Tom told the Rye Lions Club yesterday at its luncheon meeting that life at this Northern outpost was "plenty cold and monotonous" but diversions were furnished by the Army and the Red Cross. Accustomed to sub-zero temperatures throughout the year, he expressed some concern as to how he would feel when warm weather arrived. After his furlough at home he will go to Lake Placid for additional rest ; before being reassigned. His twin brother, James, joined the Army with him and is now overseas. Another brother, William, is in Germany.

Upon returning home from service, Thomas worked as a proprietor, and eventually became owner of the Rye Liquor Store for forty-seven years. On August 4, 1956, Thomas married Jane Curran Hagele, to whom he remained in a loving partnership with for fifty-eight years.

Thomas was not only a dutiful worker, soldier, and fireman, but also a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was the most kindhearted soul who could be seen in attendance at Catholic Mass every day.

Thomas Hagele will be greatly missed by his family and the many lives he touched.

Thomas O. Hagele died March 23, 2014 at ninety years old. He passed away in his sleep, surrounded by family, at his home in Rye, New York.
