William H. Cole was born in New York in 1919. In Rye his family lived at 131 Purchase Street and were members of the Presbyterian Church. William enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

NEW YORK - William Rossa Cole, an anthologist, editor, and writer of children's books, died Aug. 3 at his Manhattan home. He was 80. Mr. Cole was author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of more than 75 books, including about 50 anthologies. ''I Went to the Animal Fair: A Book of Animal Poems,'' an anthology for children that Mr. Cole edited, was named a notable book of 1958 by the American Library Association. Mr. Cole also edited ''Beastly Boys and Ghastly Girls: Poems'' and ''The Birds and Beasts Were There: Animal Poems,'' which were honored by the library as sociation in 1964 and 1965, respectively. Mr. Cole, who was born in Staten Island, served in the infantry in Europe during World War II. He rose to sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart. He served as a columnist, publisher, and publicity director after the war.
