William T. Gilmore

William T. Gilmore was born in New York June 13, 1922 to Oliver and Virginia Lewis Gilmore. His family lived at 46 3rd St in Mamaroneck, NY. William attended Mamaroneck High School.

He enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. William served in the Heavy Antiaircraft Group, 51St Def Bn, Fmf, In The Field.

The 51st Defense Battalion was an antiaircraft and coastal defense unit in the United States Marine Corps that served during World War II.

The battalion was originally formed in August 1942 and was the first African American unit in the Marine Corps.

William served with the Marines for 3 1/2 years, rising to the rank of corporal while seeing action in the South Pacific. View Muster Rolls

He married Leona Boyd in Mamaroneck in the spring of 1947. In 1950 the couple were living in New Rochelle and William was working construction as a brick layer. He later was a self employed mechanic and a member of the Barry Avenue AME Zion Church.

William Gilmore William Gilmore 54 of 534 Third St a lifelong resident of Mamaroneck died Tuesday March 1, 1977 at United Hospital following a long illness.

At the time of his death he was survived by his mother, his wife the former Leona Boyd, two daughters Patricia and Carol Gilmore both of New Rochelle and three grandchildren.
