Douglas G. Herron grew up in Rye and lived at Highland Hall. During the Korean War, Douglas served in the U.S Coast Guard. Douglas was born on December 16th, 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio to George William and Lynda Krueger Herron. His family briefly lived in Larchmont but moved to Rye, NY in 1922. Herron attended Milton school and graduated cum laude from Rye High School in 1935. As a kid, Herron was very fond of water and had a passion for sailing. He and his friend Dick CLose built a sailboat named Egret from scratch. They often found themselves sailing in the Long Island sound which Herron and Close knew very well. Following his high school career, he earned his bachelor's degree in Economics from Brown University where he was a member of the Brown Yacht Club to continue with his love for sailing. Herron then served in the Coast Guard Reserve from 1941 to 1977, obtaining the rank of Captain.
