Martin Francis Kirby

Martin Francis Kirby was born on 9/17/1895. His parents were James and Margaret (Ford) both born in Ireland. Martin had eight siblings, three brothers: Thomas, James and John and five sisters; Johanna, Margaret, Katherine, Elizabeth and Anna They all lived at 42 Davis St and were Parishioners of the Church of the Resurrection.

Martin was a veteran of World War I he served in France with the 805th Aero Squadron. He served overseas for June 15,1918 to June 12, 1919

Aero Squadrons were the designation of the first United States Army aviation units until the end of World War I. These units consisted of combat flying, training, ground support, construction and other components of the Air Service. After World War I ended, the majority of these squadrons were demobilized. Some however were retained during the interwar period of the 1920s and 1930s, and served in all theaters of operation during World War II. Today, the oldest squadrons in the United States Air Force and Air National Guard can trace their lineage back to the original Aero Squadrons of World War I.

Martin was educated in Rye schools He a superintendent on the Kennelly Estate, Rye, for 24 years. Martin was a member of Gateway Barracks 785 of Greenwich and founding member of the Rye American Legion Post 128. By all newspaper accounts Martin had an adventurous spirit and a certain flair for life.

At the time of his death he was survived by three sisters, Mrs. Katharine Taylor of Rye, Mrs. Elizabeth Scollon of New Rochelle and Mrs. Anne Grune of Mamaroneck, and several nieces and nephews. Thursday, December 18, l969

A requiem mass was held Tuesday at the Church of the Resurrection for Martin F. Kirby, 74, of 42 Davis Ave., who died Friday December 12, l969 at United Hospital. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery.
