Arthur Raymond Cleary was born in Port Chester, New York on May 29, 1930. He grew up on 95 Coolidge Avenue with his mother Dorothy M. Ide and his father John H. Cleary. In high school he was definitely a jock. He played baseball, football, and basketball and was a member of the varsity club throughout different years of high school. His love of sports is further proved by his yearbook quote which was, "to love the game beyond the prize." In 1952 he graduated from New York University and the same year, in January 1952, he enlisted in the US Army. He attended Fire Direction Control School at Fort Sill, Okla and afterwards was stationed in Europe. He was a Private with the 28th Infantry Division in Germany. He died on December 26, 2000 years after serving as a Private in the Vietnam War.
