George Edward Phelps

George Edward Phelps was born in Rye, N.Y. on June 5, 1927 son of Charles A. and Edna Moore Phelps. He had one brother Charles and a sister Louise. In Rye his family lived at 64 Grapal St.. George was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1945.

He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

After the war, George graduated from N.Y. State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences, (it is now known as Westchester Community College) with a degree in Building Construction.

He was employed by Johnson Soils Engineering Company for 39 years. George was raised in the Protestant faith and loved to canoe on many different rivers and lakes and to wander through the woods and fields marveling at the wonders of God's creation. George married Megg in 1950 and had four children. The marriage ended in 1973 and in 1975 he met and married his new love, Lois, with whom he was married until his death.

George was a Master Mason and served as Master of Stony Point Lodge #313 in 1971 after which he went through the ranks of both the York and Scottish Rites of Masonry. Upon completion of that service he was invited to join Knickerbocker Priory #1 in New York City where he advanced to Deputy Prior before moving to North Carolina.

While in New York, George became a member of Cyprus Temple Shriners in Albany New York. He also served as President of the Orange County Shrine Club and was President of the Masonic Club of Haverstraw. He also served as Patron for three years in Stony Point Chapter #540 and Rockland County Chapter #371, Order of the Eastern Star.

George was very proud and humbled to announce that he was elected to Honorary Membership in Copeland Lodge 390, A.F. and A.M. in Dobson, N.C. George was a member of Rye Post #128 American Legion for 67 years. He also was a Volunteer Firefighter in Poningoe Engine and Hose Co. for 5 years and then in West Nyack Engine Co. #24 for 56 years.

In N.C. George joined Oasis Shrine Temple in Charlotte, N.C. and the Surry Shrine Club in Mount Airy, N.C. He also belonged to the Copeland Ruritan Club in Dobson, N.C.

George Edward Phelps died on March 22, 2014 from complications of Pulmonary Fibrosis.

He was survived by Lois and her daughter Lynda and husband Christopher Zibbideo; his sons David C. Phelps, and Lee M. Phelps and Lee's wife Mary Smith, also a sister, Louise Harnett, along with numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Edna Phelps, his daughter Gretchen and son, Carl and also his brother Charles G. Phelps and his wife Alice. Also his brother-in-law, Donald T. Harnett.

There was a memorial service for George at the Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson, N.C. at 2 pm on Saturday, April 5, 2014.
