Livingston Carroll


Livingston P Carroll was born on May 9, 1919, in New York City, New York, to Dorothy G Smith, age 35, and Ralph Chatworthy Carroll, age 36. He had four brothers; James, Ralph, William and Curtis. In Rye his family lived on Hilltop Place and were members of Christ's Church.

Livingston was graduated from Taft School and graduated from Yale College in 1941. He also attended Yale University Law School.

He served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. Livingston P Carroll enlisted in the Army on September 4, 1942, in Hartford, Connecticut, during World War II. He was 23 years old.

Livingston served with the 75th Infantry Division, 899th Field Artillery, as a first lieutenant in the Field Artillery in Europe and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star.

The 75th Infantry Division arrived in Britain, 22 November 1944; headquarters having arrived on 2 November 1944.

After a brief training program, the division landed at Le Havre and Rouen, 13 December, and bivouacked at Yvetot on the 14th.

When the Battle of the Bulge offensive broke in the Ardennes, the 75th was rushed to the front and entered defensive combat, 23 December 1944, alongside the Ourthe River, advanced to the Aisne River, and entered Grandmenil, 5 January 1945.

The division relieved the 82d Airborne Division along the Salm River, 8 January, and strengthened its defensive positions until 17 January when it attacked, taking Vielsalm and other towns in the area.

The 75th Infantry Division would see action throughout 1945 in the Rhineland; Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe Campaigns.

Lieutenant Livingston Carroll was awarded the Silver Star for "Gallantry in Action," The citation read that "he continued to direct the fire of his battery for two hours after being injured in battle."

After recovering from his wounds he received his honorable discharge and returned home.

He married Miss Carol Banks on August 6,1946 In Greenwich CT. in the chapel of Christ Church Greenwich - The Rev Wendell Phillips rector of Christ's Church Rye officiated and a home reception followed. The couple would settle in Watertown Conn

Livingston was a member of the faculty Taft School Watertown, Conn.. He was a teacher of classical languages and head coach of golf, wrestling and soccer. He had been teaching at the preparatory school since 1942.

Livingston P Carroll died on September 21, 1959, of a heart attack at his home in Watertown, Connecticut, he was 40 years old.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Mrs. Carol Banks Carroll; two sons, Leslie Banks and Livingston Carroll Jr.; three daughters, Misses Patricia, Barbara and Deborah Banks, and four brothers, Ralph C, William C. John O. and James B. M. Carroll.
