Daniel Dempsey

Daniel Dempsey was born May 5, 1919 in Rye to Patrick and Mary Halpin Dempsey. He and his family resided at 10 Park Lane, they were active members of Resurrection Church. Daniel's family was considered rather large, it consisted of his father, Patrick, his mother Mary, his brothers Edward, John, James, Lawrence, Thomas V. and Patrick Jr. and his sisters Margaret, Mary, Frances, Marcella, and his younger sister Ursla. Daniel’s father was an Irish immigrant, his highest level of education was eighth grade and he was a very successful gardener. Daniels mother was also an Irish immigrant, she had an elementary school education and was a full time mom to her 13 children.

Daniel was a proud and respected member of the Rye High School class of 1936, In high school Daniel played football and was an active member in the fingerprint club.

After high school Daniel pursued a career with a local gas station. However his life changed when WWII broke out, just like many of his fellow Americans. In November of 1942 Daniel was drafted into the United States Army. Daniel was a quick learner and quickly achieved the rank of Corporal. In July of 1943 Daniel’s service concluded, and he returned home.

Following the war Daniel moved to Suffolk, NY, where he worked for the town of Huntington as superindendent of the beaches. Daniel’s life changed for the better when he met the love of his life, Nada Griffin in 1953. Daniel passed away on November 17th, 1987 after battling a severe illness.
