BIOGRAPHY

Nicholas Groglio

Nicholas J. Groglio was born June 11th, 1925 in Rye to Gerald and Mary (Grosso) Groglio. His siblings were brothers, Gerald, William, Joseph, George and John; and sister, Angela. In Rye his family lived at 34 Elizabeth St. and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

Nick attended Rye Schools but left in the summer of his junior year in 1943 to serve in the United States Army during WW II. During the war he served with Comapny A, of the 23rd Tank Battalion in the much storied Third Armored Spearhead Division, nicknamed Rolling Thunder.

The first elements of the 3rd Armored saw combat on 29 June in France, with the division as a whole beginning combat operations on 9 July 1944. The division was the "spearhead" of the First Army through the Normandy Campaign, taking part in a number of engagements, most notably in the Battle of Saint-Lô, where it suffered significant casualties.

Nick's service continued as a tank driver during combat in the European Theater, participating in battles in France, Belgium, Luxemburg and Germany. He received the Bronze Star, European Middle Eastern Service, WWII Victory and Good Conduct Medals as well as 5 major Battle Campaign Ribbons.

After the war he was employed at Arnolds Bakery in Greenwich, CT as Superintendent of Production and Retired in 1983. In 1947, he married Mary Cicoria of Port Chester, NY.

An avid athlete and sports fan all his life, he was a fixture at most Rye High School sports events, receiving many honors for his past athletic achievements and contributions as a Rye Garnet in the early 1940's.

In 2003 he was named Honorary Captain of the Rye Garnets football team, a tribute he cherished. Nick also enjoyed traveling, and spending time with his large family and many friends. He was the Tour Director of the Town Of Southeast Senior Citizens and past President of the Hunter's Glen Condominium Association.

Nicholas J. Groglio, resident of Rye, NY for 62 years and Carmel, NY for 27 years, sadly passed away March 30th, 2015. He was 89.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Groglio, his daughter Marianne and husband Joseph Giordano of Patterson, NY; son Nicholas Groglio Jr. and wife Tracey of Rye, and daughter Michelle and husband Terry Quinn of Fairfield, CT.
