Gustav "Gus" Gurska

Gustav "Gus" Gurska was born on January 4, 1924, in New York, New York, to Lena Byk, age 32, and Gustav Gurska, age 41. He had a brother Richard and in in Rye his family lived on Rockridge Rd. Gustav was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1941. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Gus was a World War II veteran, having served in the European theater as a machine gunner in the Timberwolves of the U. S. Army's 104th Infantry Division. His unit landed at Normandy 99 days after D-Day.

Just before the Battle of the Bulge, he suffered a shrapnel wound, for which he was later awarded the Purple Heart. After recovering in a London hospital, he rejoined his unit near the end of the Battle of the Bulge. Among other accomplishments, his unit assisted in the liberation of the Nordhausen Concentration Camp in Aachen Germany.

After the war, Gus married Alice C. Hirsch on November 4, 1950, in Mount Vernon, New York. They had four children during their marriage.

Gus was a career employee of Hilton Davis Chemical Company and retired in 1995.



Gustav "Gus" Gurska passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2012. Age 88.


Beloved husband of the late Alice Gurska (nee Hirsch). Loving father of Nancy Gurska, Phyllis (Michael) Volan, Barbara (Gary) Williams and Amy (David) West, dear grandfather of Robert, Kathleen, Renee, Charles, Gustav, Olivia, Madeline and Peter. Brother of Richard and the late Harriet Gurska.
