Alex Petrides

Alex Petrides was born in New York in 1920. In Rye his family lived at 85 Grapal Street. He lived with his Father, Nicholas Petrides, and his sister Sophie Marcopulos, her husband Thomas and their two childrem.

Alex was a graduate of Rye High School, Class of 1939. In school he was a member of the National Honors Society and Business manager for “ The stagecoach “ . Alex also belonged to the Self-Reliant Club, Band, Orchestra, Drivers Club, Le Cercle Francais, Q.V., Messenger, and was a Junior Coach. His Senior Quote was: “A Public Man of Light and Leading. “

After graduating he went on to attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Alex would enlist in U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II., with the service number: 42144190.

In 1950 Alex would marry Yvonne Barr and they would settle in West Hartford, CT.

Alex worked as an aeronautical engineer with Fairchild in Hagerstown, PA, prior to and after the war, and in 1951 took a position with Kaman Aircraft in Bloomfield.

After retirement from Kaman, Alex continued working with Sikorsky Aircraft, retiring in 1988. He was an active member of the First Church of Christ Congregational in West Hartford where he taught Sunday school, and served as Sunday School Superintendent, deacon, and on numerous committees. Alex was also a member of the Civitan Club, The Old Guard, and Fernleigh Lawn Bowling Club.

Alexander Petrides, 84, of West Hartford died Friday, March 11, 2005, at St. Francis Hospital.

At the time of his death, in addition to Yvonne, his wife of 55 years, he was survived by three children and their spouses, Marilyn and Robert Cohen of Farmington, Alexander B. and Jan Petrides of Sacramento, CA, and Thomas and Toula Petrides of Santa Monica, CA; and his grandchildren, Sarah and Stephen Cohen of Farmington, and Athena and Steven Petrides of Santa Monica, CA. He was predeceased by his sister, Sophie Marcopulos, and his nephews, Mark and Nicholas Marcopulos.
