William J. Herschkel

William J. Herschkel was born October 25,1921 in Yonkers, New York. In Rye his family lived at 200 North Street and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. He was employed by Port Chester Electrical Construction Co. before the war.

William enlisted September 16, 1942 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

According to the Marine Corps Muster Rolls he served with Company "E", Second Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine Division. During his overseas service he saw action on Guadalcanal and Bougainville Islands.


In September 1944, William returned to the U.S. and was assigned to the elite Infantry School Battalion of the Training Command at Camp Pendleton, CA

CAMP PENDLETON, Oceanside, Calif. — Marine Pfc. William Joseph Herschkel, l \ S. M. C, of 200 North Street, Rye, has been assigned to the elite Infantry School Battalion of the Training Command here . This school, only recently organized, is regarded by military experts as the crack outfit of the Marine Corps. It is unique among all armed services schools in that every member of its staff has had combat experience in the jungle-clad islands of the South Pacific. The school will train officers and enlisted men in an intensive eight weeks' course, and graduates will be assigned as instructor’s leaders and supervisory personnel for recruit depots and replacement units. Pfc. Herschkel attended Rye High School. He was employed by Port Chester Electrical Construction Co. before enlisting in the Marine Corps September 16, 1942, at New York City. During his oversea s service he saw action on Guadalcanal and Bougainville Islands before coming to Camp Pendleton.

William received his honorable discharge on November 27, 1945 he had served over 3 years including over 1 1/2 years overseas.
