William J. Matthews was born in New York in 1927. In Rye his family lived at 35 Evergreen Avenue. William enlisted in 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He attended Rye schools when his education was interrupted by World War II. Bill enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific. He became a Policeman for the City of Rye, NY.


William J. Matthews, Sr., retired firefighter and Greenburgh resident, died on December 30, 2004 after a long illness.

Bill was born on May 2, 1927 in Rye, NY to Stanley J. and Carmelita Harrigan Matthews. He attended Rye schools when his education was interrupted by World War II.

Bill enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific. He became a Policeman for the City of Rye, NY. Bill was appointed a firefighter in the Fairview Fire Department in 1957 serving 33 years. In 1971 he married Anna Yarabek.

Bill was involved in many fraternal organizations. He was a charter member of Local 1586 Greenburgh Firefighters IAFF, Westchester Firefighters Emerald Society, Paid Fireman's Conference of Westchester, Valhalla American Legion Post, New York State Police and Fireman's Retirement Association, a former member of Rye Volunteer Fire Department, Fairview Engine Company #1 and Ossining Independent Hose Company. Bill's most cherished involvement was with the Samsons Salts a World War II Navy Veterans Association.

Bill is survived by his wife, his two sons Barry and wife Bernadette and James and wife Debra, his pride and joy grandchildren Megan Theresa, Brian William, William James and Chelsea Lyn. Bill was predeceased by his infant son William J. Matthews, Jr.

Visiting hours will be Monday, January 3, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm and Tuesday, January 4, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at McElroy-Flynn in Elmsford.
