Leland G. Yarter


Leland G. Yarter was born December 27, 1924 in Hartford, Ct. to Howard and Pauline Richardson Yarter. He had one sister Elinor and in Rye his family lived at 633 Milton Road.

Leland was raised and educated in Rye, NY graduating from Rye High School in 1942.

He served 3 1/2 years in the United States Navy during World War II. Leyland was a Petty Officer in the Pacific Theater on the USS LST 606 (Landing Ship Tank).

During World War II USS LST-606 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and participated in the following campaigns: Western Caroline Islands operation, Capture and occupation of southern Palau Islands, 6 September to 14 October 1944; Leyte operation, Leyte landings, 16 to 30 October and 12 to 25 November 1944; Luzon operation, Lingayen Gulf landings, 4 to 18 January 1945 and the Okinawa Gunto operation, Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, 1 April to 30 June 1945. Leland married Frances Clark on June 28, 1947 in Port Chester, NY and they had two children during their marriage.

He was a retired Tool and Die Maker for Brailsford & Co. in Rye, NY. and retired in 1989. He was a member of the Rye Fish and Game Club.

Leland G. Yarter, 90, a resident of Port Chester died December 7, 2015.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife Frances Yarter of Port Chester, NY., son James Yarter and wife Deborah of Port Chester, NY., daughter Paula Mastroianni and husband Thomas, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids, NC., grandchildren Benjamin Yarter, Hope Grisanti and Stephen Grisanti and wife Tania and great granddaughter Deana Grisanti. Sister Elinor Tripp of Argyle,NY. Sisters-in-laws Harriet Ferris of Rye, NY and Barbara Ferris of Memphis, TN. and many nieces and nephews.
