Robert E. Clay was born on March 27, 1931 in Connecticut and moved to Rye, New York at a young age. Robert lived at 48 Poningo Street and then moved to 56 Hill Street. He lived with his parents, Andrew and Regina, and five siblings: Cleora, Francis, Bernard, Edward, and Betty Ann. Robert's father worked as a chef and his mother as a seamstress. His mother was born in Poland and then moved to the US where she met Robert's father. Before Robert joined the U.S. Marine Corps, he graduated from Rye High School in 1950. In high school, Robert joined many sports teams, including Junior Varsity Basketball and Baseball. He was widely known as a funny guy to his classmates, and he was even voted "Class Wits" for his senior superlative.
