Thomas R. O'Reilly


Thomas O’Reilly lived at 506 Midland Avenue in Rye, New York. In 1940 Rye was a small town with a population of 9,865. Thomas's father Stephen rented this home for $50/month ($950 in today’s dollars). At the age 13, Thomas was a middle child and his father was 48 and his mother Margaret Kirby O'Reilly was 50.

Thomas's father had a college education, while his mother had a high school education and Thomas was in elementary school. Thomas's father was born in Newfoundland and his mother was born in New York. Thomas and his siblings Stephen, Jacqueline, Jean and Claire were all born in New York.

The census worker recorded Thomas's father's occupation as a Sewer Construction Superintendent. In the last week of March in 1940, he worked 48 hours. In 1939, he earned $3,640 ($69,160 in today’s dollars) and worked 52 weeks of the year. The family were parishioners of the Church of the Resurrection.

Thomas was a Rye High School graduate class of 1944 and he enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

After the war Thomas's family moved to Maryland and he graduated from of the School of Architecture, Catholic University of America.

He married Claire Hammer in October 1961 in Washington, District of Columbia. They had two children during their marriage.

Thomas was a member ot Potomac chapter, American Institute of Architects, the Knights of Columbus and the Rotary Club.

He died on December 23, 1997, in Silver Spring, Maryland, at the age of 71, and was buried there.
