Charles G. Mc Laughlin

Charles G. Mc Laughlin was born Dec 30 1912 in New Rochelle to Alexander and Helen Kelly McLaughlin. He was raised in Mamaroneck where he attended public schools and graduated from Mamaroneck High School. In Rye his family lived at 117 Grace Church Street.

On Sept 24 1938 he married Catherine Moran at Resurrection Church in Rye where he was also a parishioner.

Charles served in the US Navy during World War II and attained the rank of petty officer.

McLaughlin Returns from Navy and Reopens Station
Charles G. McLaughlin, who was honorably discharged from the U. S Navy in February after two years of service, has reopened McLaughlins Service Center at Theodore Fremd and Locust Avenues, and announces he is all ready to serve his former customers and friends with gasoline, oil and auto accessories. For eight years previous to joining the Navy, McLaughlin conducted the Service Center. His home is at 117 Grace Church Street.

On July 1 1948 he joined the Rye Police Department. He was promoted In January 1955 to sergeant, to lieutenant in October 1960 and In May 1961 he was appointed chief. He retired in December 1977.



He was a dedicated police officer and was dedicated to the improvement of quality of life in the community" said Rye Detective Pat Spacavento who worked with Chief McLaughlin tor 14 years.

Charles would later admit that he "became a policeman almost by accident" - He Joined the police force at the age of 35 having turned down an appointment three other times. He agreed to join the Rye Police Department in 1948 after he lost hit lease on the Mobil service station he had owned tor many years in downtown Rye.

In a Dec 30 1977 interview on the eve of his retirement Charles said "a small town chief has to be a Jack-of-all-trades, a clergyman, a father confessor, a lawyer and often a parent"

The most rewarding aspect of his police career he said was that " it bought me close to all of the people of Rye"

Chief McLaughlin's reputation spread outside the Rye city limits in the spring of 1978, when he banned the use of skateboards on the streets and sidewalks.

In the 1977 interview he recalled that a woman Inspecting his badge at a metal detection station at the Rochester airport immediately recognized his name because she had heard him discussing his stance on the safety of skateboarding on the radio that day.

Chief McLaughlin lived in Rye for 49 years. - He was a member, a first vice president and served on the board of governors of the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police. He was a member and past president of the Westchester Chief Association.

He was a longtime member and former president of the Rye Lions Club and a member and past commander of Rye American Legion Post 128. He served as a volunteer with the Rye Fire Department.

In 1989 he was named Rye Citizen of the Year by the Rye Kiwanis Club. He was afro honored in 1971 as "outstanding law enforcement officer" by the Rye chapter of UNIGO, a national organization that stands tor Unity Neighborliness Integrity Charity and Opportunity.

Charles G McLaughlin retired Rye police chief who served 30 years on the city's police force died March 17, 1988 at United Hospital in Port Chester after a long illness. He wee 75.

At the time of his death, in addition to his wife he was survived by a daughter Kathy Rigano of New York City: a brother Alexander of Satellite Beach Fla and two sisters Dorothy Verace of Satellite Beach and Gwendolyn Nagel of Homestead Fl.-
