BIOGRAPHY

Daniel Patrick CoughlinDaniel Patrick Coughlin

Daniel P. Coughlin was born Aug 30 1923 to James and Margaret Costello Coughlin in Port Chester. In Rye his family lived at 21 Grapal St. and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. He attended Resurrection Grammar School in Rye and graduated from Rye High School in 1941 He enlisted January 27, 1942 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

PARTICIPATED IN BATTLE FOR GUADALCANAL, NEW BRITAIN, CAPE GLOUCESTER, PELELIU.

Daniel served in the US Marine Corps in the South Pacific. He served with the 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Raider Battalian.

The Marine Raiders are special operations forces originally established by the United States Marine Corps during World War II to conduct amphibious light infantry warfare. "Edson's" Raiders of 1st Marine Raider Battalion and "Carlson's" Raiders of 2nd Marine Raider Battalion are said to have been the first United States special operations forces to form and see combat during World War II.

The battle Edson's Raiders is best known for was the defense of Lunga Ridge on Guadalcanal September 12–14, 1942. Daniel's Raider Battalion, with two companies of the 1st Parachute Battalion attached, were sent to a ridge line a short distance south of Henderson Field. Here, they were supposed to get a short rest but Japanese forces unexpectedly attacked the position on the first evening, penetrating the left center of his line of resistance, forcing a withdrawal to a reserve position.

Approximately 800 Marines withstood the repeated assaults of more than 3,000 Japanese on the "Bloody Ridge", as it came to be called. To the men of the 1st Raider Battalion, however, who sustained 256 casualties, it became the Battle of "Edson's Ridge", in high honor of the officer who "was all over the place, encouraging, cajoling, and correcting as he continually exposed himself to enemy fire."

We know thru Marine Corps Muster Rolls that Daniel was promoted to corporal. After the Marine Raider Battalions were disbanded, Daniel mustered in with the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was awarded a Purple Heart medal after he was wounded at the Battle of Peleliu Island in September, 1944.

At Peleliu, the 1st Battalion assaulted the island alongside the rest of the 1st Marine Division under Major General William H. Rupertus, fighting primarily to secure the island's airstrip and prevent interference with the Allied offensive in the Philippines.

Daniel landed at either Orange Beach 1 or Orange Beach 2 on D-Day, September 15, 1944, the 1st Battalion would gain notoriety for the total destruction of an attempted Japanese tank-infantry counterattack. This costly maneuver of Japanese tanks and a company-sized infantry element would be the sole instance of open Japanese maneuver during the months long Battle of Peleliu.
