Frederick Stanton Zollner

Frederick Stanton "Stan" Zollner was born on August 27, 1920 in Cook County, Illinois, but soon moved to 44 Allendale Drive in Rye, New York . Stanton lived with his father, Albert Zollner, his mother, Marie Catherwood, and two brothers (Richard and Robert). Stan’s father rented their home for $90/month ($1,710 in today’s dollars).

Stan attended Rye High School, graduating class of 1938 and was very active in clubs and sports such as “Self Reliant, Hitching Post Member, “R.U.R.”, Football player, Baseball player, Q.V. member, Chess Club member, Driver’s Club member, Messenger.”
After high school Stan was a graduate of Phillips Academy and Middlebury College.

He enlisted into the United States Army on September 5th, 1942. Stan was a First Lieutenant in the 119th Field Artillery. The 119th went into active combat assigned to Patton's Third Army as an anti-aircraft and field artillery battalion. During the next eleven months, from France, Belgium, and into Germany, the 119th participated in five major campaigns; Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. In May 1945, when the war ended, they were in the vicinity of Munich, Germany. The battalion was then moved back to Metz, France, where it remained until November and then was shipped home in December.

After serving four years with the Army Stan was graduated from the law school, Boston University. He was assistant to the national sales manager, legal division, at Prentice-Hall, New York City. He received his doctorate in juris prudence from Middlebury College in 1958. This helped him with his sales: loose leaf services were weekly/monthly updated laws passes by congress.

On August 16th,1963 Stanton would marry , Ellen Miller, in San Francisco, California.

For over 25 yrs, he was the top Loose leaf Services salesman for Prentice Hall book publishing company, in CA and had the whole state of Alaska. He did lots of lectures for the company and tried management but went back to sales-Alaska and a few companies in San Francisco.

Frederick Stanton Zollner died In San Rafael, October 4, 1993. Loving husband of Ellen Zollner loving father of Katharine Zeck of Grand Junction, CO; stepfather of Jim Easton of Clovis and Judy Henry of Newcastle; dear brother of Robert Zollner of Andover, Mass. and the late Richard Zollner of Grand Junction; adored grandfather of 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandson; a native of Evanston, III; aged 73 years; a retired tax lawyer for Prentice-Hall Publishing Co.

First I want to thank you all for including my dad-Fredrick StantOn Zollner and his twin younger brothers: Richard & Robert Zollner on your WWII memory wall, World WarII Vet project.

I was given your email address by The Rye Historical Society. My cousins and I were pleasantly surprised by this honor to our dad's! I have a correction to my dad's name. It is spelled with an "o" for Stanton, not an "e". My dad has a marker in Golden Gate Cemetery, San Bruno, CA. Near where he lived-San Rafael, CA. F. STANTON ZOLLNER

His ashes were spread over the ocean at mm252. My memory is that they couldn't guarantee that exact mile marker since many ashes were spread at the same time. I belly laughed when I saw his name! My dad was born: only- Stanton Zollner-two names only. Stanton was his maternal grandmother's last name. His mother had lost her first baby son and gave my dad that son's middle name because she wasn't sure if dad would live. He did, lol.

When dad-Stan, enlisted in the army, he didn't want NMN (No Middle Name) as a middle name, so he added Fredrick as a first name. I asked him why he chose Fredrick, he said that he liked the sound of it, and Stanton was to be a middle name in the first place. It surprised me that he didn't have to go through any legal process to change his name, they just took his word for it.

Dad went by Stan his whole life or F.S. in the business world. For over 25 yrs, dad was the top Loose leaf Services salesman for Prentice Hall book publishing Co.
