James B. M. Carroll

James B. M. Carroll was born April 3, 1924 in New York to Dorothy G Smith, age 39, and Ralph Chatworthy Carroll, age 41. He had four brothers; Ralph, Livingston, William and Curtis. In Rye his family lived on Hilltop Place and were members of Christ Church.

Known as Jimmy to his close friends and family, he attended Rye Country Day School and graduated from The Taft School in Watertown, CT. He also attended Bowdoin College.

James enlisted in the Army on July 28, 1943, in Hartford, Connecticut, during World War II. He was 19 years old. He was a member of C Company, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division.

The 101st was brought to full strength in February 1943 and departed for Europe on 27 August 1944. The regiment arrived in Cherbourg, France on 7 September 1944 and prepared for combat operations.

James spent two and one-half years in the Army, where he saw action on the front line in Central Europe, Northern France and the Battle of the Bulge.

Pfc. James Carroll, has received the Combat Infantryman's Badge for "exemplary conduct in action against the enemy."

He also received received the American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. James was honorably discharged in 1946.


He returned to school and graduated from from Yale University in 1950.

James began his professional career as an investment broker in 1950. He was with Butler, Herrick and Marshall, and then with Wood Walker & Co. where he became a partner. In 1973 Wood Walker was bought by Legg Mason.

He spent over 20 years as a floor broker on the New York Stock Exchange where he also held a seat. He retired in 1990. James was named for James B. Mabon, his mother's brother-in-law, who was president of the New York Stock Exchange from 1912-14.

Always the sports fan, James enjoyed the NY Giants football team and was particularly fond of baseball, especially the NY Giants baseball team before they moved to San Francisco in 1958.

He was also an avid golfer and member of Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, Marsh Landing Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach and The Apawamis Club in Rye, NY. Mr. Carroll was nominated to and elected in 1989 to the United States Seniors Golf Association.


James B. M. Carroll, 84, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; Greenwich, CT and Rye, NY died peacefully in his sleep after a long illness at McGraw Center for Caring Hospice December 14, 2008.

His brothers, Ralph, Curtis and Livingston predeceased him. He was survived by a brother John Otis. He leaves his loving wife of 46 years Anne-Louise, sons Scott (his wife Delphine) and Randy (his wife Kathleen), daughter Libby (her husband Steve) Poppleton, and nine grandchildren.

A celebration of his life service was held Friday, December 19, 2008 at Christ Church in Ponte Vedra Beach. I
