James W. Murray

James W. Murray was born on April 26, 1918 in Rye to William and Margaret O'Hare Murray. In Rye his family lived at 27 Davis Ave. James’s household consisted of his father William, his mother Margaret and his younger sisters Margaret and Elizabeth. The Murray family were parishioners of the Church of the Resurrection. James’s father worked as a successful local plumber. His mom was an Irish immigrant, who like most depression era mom's had a full time job raising kids and tending the all essential vegetable garden.

James was a proud member of the Rye High School class of 1936.

He served in the United States Army from March 1941 to July 22, 1945, ranked Staff Sergeant. Served in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge, until an honorable discharge. He served in the 45th Field Artillery Battalion, 8th Infantry Division. On September 6, 1942, he married Muriel McLoughlin at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, NY.

"The Bronze Star was awarded to Staff Sgt. Janes W. Murray, . son of Mr. and Mrs. William Murray of 26 Davis Street for meritorious service in the- European theatre of war. Having seen much action in France and Germany. Sgt. Murray is now home with an honorable discharge, he lives with his wife and 17-month-old son at 731 Boston Post Road. He also was decorated with the American Defense, the Good Conduct and the European African Middle East Ribbon."

Mr. Murray was born and lived in Rye for 85 years. Locally, he was on the City of Rye Plumbing Board for over 20 years, also served as Volunteer for the Rye Fire Department for 50 years and was involved in the Rye Babe Ruth League and the Rye Laddies. He was a member of the Church of the Resurrection.

At the time of his death he was survived by his loving wife, Muriel; sons: Charles Hugh Murray of Spring Hill, FL; Kevin Andrew Murray of Huntington , NY and daughter, Joanne Louise Murray of Rye, NY. Sister, Mary Flanagan of Brookfield, CT and eight grandchildren: Charles Murray, Jr. of Rye, NY; Douglas and Joey Murray of Springfield, FL; Patrick, Peter and Grace Murray of Huntington, NY and Ryan James, Kaitlyn Ann, Kiernan John Melahn, all of Rye, NY. Nieces: Judy and Marry Ellen of Brookfield, CT and Sharon North of Port Chester, NY, and several great-grand nieces and nephews. Predeceased family members: son, James W. Murray, Jr., sister, Margaret Murray Arsenault and daughter-in-law, Paula Ann Murray.

James William Murray, Sr., a longtime resident of Rye, died of Cancer on February 22, 2004 at his home in Rye. He was 85 years old. Mr. Murray owned and operated James W. Murray Plumbing and Heating for over 50 years. He retired in 1996. James was born on April 26, 1918 in Rye to William and Margaret O'Hare Murray. He was educated in the City of Rye and graduated from Rye High School. He served in the United States Army from March 1941 to July 22, 1945, ranked Staff Sergeant. Served in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge, until an honorable discharge. He belonged to the 45th Field Artillery Battalion Association.

On September 6, 1942, he married Muriel McLoughlin at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, NY. Mr. Murray was born and lived in Rye for the past 85 years. Murray, Jr., sister, Margaret Murray Arsenault and daughter-in-law, Paula Ann Murray. Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at Graham Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is 10 am on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, NY. Interment will follow at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Hospice of Westchester in Loving Memory of James W. Murray, Sr. and James W. Murray, Jr. GRAHAM FUNERAL HOME 1036 Boston Post Rd.,

That's my pop. He was a tough old bird loved his grandkids and would do anything for you.  Especially if you were from rye.  Miss him everyday. He'd be 104 if he was still here
