John A. Walsh

JJohn Arthur Walsh was born on February 25, 1913, in Hamilton, New York, to Mary Margurite Lyons, age 34, and Wardwell Augustine Walsh, age 38. In Rye his family lived at 48 Lynden St and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

John graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Colgate University in 1933. He was an All American and Professional Basketball Player. He received his Masters Degree at Syracuse University.

John had been teaching at Rye High School for 9 years when he enlisted and served as a Lt. In the U.S. Navy during WWII.

Four High School Teachers Serving With Armed Forces
Four former members of the Rye High School faculty are now serving in the armed forces of the United States. Dayton Newton, director of music, is a lieutenant (j. g.) in the Navy and is now stationed in Chicago, 111. Thomas Roberts, formerly of the Mathematics department, was commissioned an ensign in the Navy in June, studied at Harvard University during the summer, and is now an instructor on the "Prairie State," a naval training ship stationed in the Hudson at New York. Otto C. Heddericg, of the department of English, entered the Army in July and is now with the Headquarters Company of the 439th Aviation Squadron in Atlantic City. John Walsh, head of the Latin department, was commissioned an ensign in the Navy in the late summer and Is now stationed at Newport, R. I. Miss Marjorie Sturges, a member of the French department, has completed her examination for a commission of lieutenant (j. g.) and is now awaiting her appointment from Washington. At that time she will become a member of the Waves, the Women's Auxiliary Corps organized for service in the Navy.

After the war, John married Elaine Edith Taylor in Elmira, New York, on February 7, 1948, when he was 34 years old and they would have four children.

He was Stone Scholar at Columbia Law School and joined the New York City law firm of Cahill, Gordon and Reindel and served on the Law Review.

John moved to Delray Beach in 1979 from Ridgewood, NJ.

John Walsh, 76 of Delray Beach, died June 1, 1989. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Elaine; two daughters, Cindy Cross of Naples, FL and Meghan E. Bickert of Woodcllff Lake, NJ; two sons, John T. Walsh of Boynton Beach and Thomas D. Walsh of Loveland, CO.

The Funeral Mass was held at Emanuel Catholic Church, Delray Beach, FL.
