John Dacy Stevens

John Dacy Stevens was born on March 28, 1921, in Port Chester, New York, to Mary A Dacy, age 28, and William H Stevens, age 27. In Rye his family lived at 190 Ridge Street.

John graduated Port Chester High School Class of 1939 and Dartmouth College with an AB Degree in 1943.

John enlisted August 9, 1942 and served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He Graduated USMC Officers Training School in May 1943. He was assigned to the 28th Marine Regiment of the 5th Marine Division as a First Lieutenant and participated in the capture of Iwo Jima. (See Muster Rolls)

After extensive training the division loaded ships and left Hawaii in January 1945. By mid-February they were sailing past Saipan headed for Iwo Jima.

The 5th Division landed on beaches red 1, red 2 and green 1 at the base of Mount Suribachi on 19 February 1945 on Iwo Jima. The division sustained heavy initial losses, so much so that by that afternoon, the 26th Marine Regiment (26th Marines) had to be released as the division reserve.

On 23 February, two American flags were raised on Mount Suribachi by members of the 28th Marine Regiment (28th Marines). The 5th Division would fight on Iwo Jima from 19 February until 26 March where they would sustain 2,482 killed in action, 19 missing in action, and 6,218 wounded in action.

This was the highest casualty rate among the three Marine divisions involved in the invasion. The 5th Division began loading onto ships on 26 March, finally leaving Iwo Jima on 27 March 1945 sailing for Hawaii.

John was honorably discharged on April 11, 1946 after spending over two years overseas. He would remain in the Marine Corps Reserves serving as a Captain until 1958. View Discharge Records

He married Audre Billington on December 17, 1948, in Rye, New York. He had three children during his marriage. John graduated Fordham Law School with an LLB Degree in 1949. He engaged in the practice of law with offices at 319 Westchester Avenue.

He was a member at the New York State and Westchester County Bar Associations. He was past Director of Civil Defense for the Village of Port Chester and Unincorporated Area of the Town of Rye. He was active in community affairs including Community Chest, Red Cross, YMCA and Boy Scouts.

John Dacy Stevens died on January 23, 1990, in Buffalo, New York, at the age of 68, and was buried in Bath, New York.

Hello, this was my grandfather, who took part in the amphibious attacks on Saipan and Iwo Jima.  Grateful if you have more information on which unit he was a part of in the marine corps.
