John "Jack" P. Hurley

John P. Hurley was born in New York in 1918 to Patrick W. Hurley and Loretta Coffey. In Rye his family lived at 98 Wappanocca and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. In 1940 Jack was 22 with a 15-years old, younger sister, Dorothy. Jack's father was 53 and his mother was 47. Jack was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1937. The census worker recorded Jack's occupation as a Bookkeeper at a country club. In 1939, he earned $375 ($7,125 in today’s dollars) and worked 21 weeks of the year. He enlisted 2 Sep 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

During World War II he served serving with the 339th "Polar Bear” Regiment in Italy as a medical aide and ambulance driver. Jack's 339th Infantry Regiment (Hurley Article) (Hurley Article) was activated in 1942, to serve in the European theater, fighting in the Allied campaign in Italy from 1944 to 1945. The regiment was assigned to the 85th Infantry Division. As a unit of the 85th Infantry or "Custer" Division, the 339th Infantry saw combat service in Italy from March 1944 until the surrender of German forces in May 1945. Jack received the Good Conduct Medal (Daily Item Article and Picture) and was honorably discharged 2 Nov 1945.

Jack married Marian Fedorka on Jan 19, 1947 in Port Chester and they had two sons and a daughter. Upon his return he workod for the US Postal Service and retired in 1987. John was a life member of the Poningo Engine and Hose Company of Rye.
