Marco Marcopulos

Marco Marcopulos was born in 1923 in New York to Sophie Petrides Marcopulos, age 18, and Thomas Peter Marcopulos, age 29.

He had two brothers Nicholas and Thomas and in Rye his family lived at 85 Grapal Street.

Marco was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1941. In high school he was a member of various clubs and a member of the National Honor Society. His motto was "Quiet humor is always a success"

He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Marco enlisted in the Army Air Force in January, 1943 and served with the Ninth Air Force unit the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Group. He was as a Photo-Topographer and attained the rank of sergeant.

Known as a "plotter " he served in the battle of Europe by correlating aerial reconnaissance photos with map references, enabling air and ground forces to use the photographs with certainty of the exact views they presented.

He was commended by 67th Group commanding officer, Colonel Leghorn for "the high standard of work done by him in the plotting section; for speed in which he turned out these plots, done not at the expense of accuracy: and further that the results of his efforts were an important factor in making a more effective use of reconnaissance for the army."

Marco received his honorable discharge on November 27, 1945 and returned home.

He married Laura Jenvey on December 26, 1946, in Harrison, New York. They had four children during their marriage.

Marco worked for General Electric as a Financial Officer, where he had opportunity to work at GE's plants throughout the country and abroad, including those in Burlington, VT. Shelbyville, IN. Singapore and Plainville, CT. Marco retired in 1984.

After his retirement, he was involved with Meals on Wheels and had been the State Coordinator for AARP Tax Assistance Program.

He was a member of the VFW Hannon-Hatch Post No.254, West Hartford, and the West Hartford Squires Club.

Marco Marcopulos, 73, husband of Laura (Jenvey) Marcopulos of West Hartford, died Tuesday (Nov. 19, 1996) at home.

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, by his children and their spouses, Stephen and Gail Marcopulos of Indianapolis, IN., Susan and Darrell Shewmaker of Georgetown, IN., Marian and Robert O'Brien of West Hartford and Diane Marcopulos of West Hartford; a brother, Thomas Marcopulos of Tucson, AZ., an uncle, Alex Petrides of West Hartford; grand children, Lauren, Kathleen and Elizabeth Shewmaker, Casey, Natalie and Stephanie O'Brien; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also predeceased by his brother, Nicholas Marcopulos. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford, CT.
