Richard E. Hanley


Richard Everett Hanley was born Jan 18,1938 in Harrison the son of Augustus and Ethel Carpenter Hanley. He had two sisters Caroline and Ruth and a brother Ralph. In Rye the family lived at 8 Ridgeland Manor and were members of Christs Church.

Richard was a graduate of Rye High School class of 1956, the Academy of Aeronautics La-Guardia Airfield LL and a graduate of Westchester Community College with an associates degree In mechanical technology, 1960.

Prior to entering the service, he was employed with Arnold Bakers, Port Chester as a mechanic and Adler Electronics, New Rochelle as a mechanical engineer.

He was a member of Christ’s Church Rye (Episcopal), the Rye YMCA, the National Rifle Association, the Alumni of Rye High School and of Westchester Community College.



Richard enlisted in the United States Army April 4,1961 at Fort Dix NJ.

He completed the radio relay and carrier operation course at the Army Signal Training Center Fort Gordon Ga. During the eight-week course Richard was trained to operate and maintain radio relay systems and carrier equipment

Richard went overseas to Germany on Sept 4, 1961, serving as a Specialist 4th class with Company B of the 32nd Signal Battalion.

Tragically, Richard Everett Hanley, 25 years old, died as a result of head injuries received in an automobile accident In Frankfort Germany on November 1,1963.

His body arrived back in Rye with military escort and was brought to the William H. Graham Funeral Home by the U.S. Air Force.

Rev. Dr. Wendell Phillips conducted funeral services at Christ's Church. Internment with full military honors was held at Greenwood Union Cemetery.

In addition to his mother, he was survived by one sister Miss Caroline Gertrude Hanley of Rye, one brother Ralph A Hanley of Port Chester, two nephews Jeffrey and Scott and a niece Deborah.
