BIOGRAPHY

Robert W. C. Hayman

Robert Campbell Hayman was born on November 5, 1923, in Providence, Rhode Island, his father, Robert, was 34 and his mother, Eva, was 30. His Mother Eva Senecal Hayman died when she was just 33 years old in 1926. That left his father Robert Campbell Hayman to raise Robert and his five siblings, Leah 14, James 9, Dorothy 7, Harvey 6, Robert 3 and a new born Marie. The family moved to Portchester in the early 1930s and soon after to Rye. Tragically after a long illness their father passed in December of 1940, by then Harvey and the younger kids were living with their married sister Leah Adams and her husband George. In Rye his family lived at 399 Rye Beach Avenue.

A graduate of Rye High School Class of 1942, Robert was an admired track and football star, affectionately nicknamed ''Rabbit''.

High School Eleven Plays Tie Game with Bellows
The High School eleven battled to a scoreless tie, Saturday, with the Bellows team at the Rye stadium. Bob Hayman, ihe Garnets sustaining ground gainer this season, has left school to enter the Merchant Marine, and his services were sorely missed by the local eleven. The Garnet was stopped time and again by pass interceptions and their powerful line stopped all the Bellows potential scoring drives. The local eleven will travel to Ossining tomorrow, seeking their third win of the season.
THE RYE CHRONICLE Friday, October 30, 1941

His brother Harvey Joseph Hayman died in service on April 5, 1942, in Hawaii when Robert Campbell was 18 years old.

Robert joined the Merchant Marines directly after graduating and was accepted into Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy. Simultaneously, he attended the academy and enlisted in The United States Navy. He was promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant during his tour in the South Pacific in WWII. He proudly served on the USS La Salle which engaged in troop transport and amphibious operations in Saipan, Guadalcanal, the Solomon Islands, Palau Islands and Anguar.

After the war, through the G.I. Bill, he attended and graduated from Syracuse University. His naval career continued in the Naval Reserve, touring yearly on naval destroyers and teaching engineering students. He retired in 1974 as a highly decorated Commander of the Third Naval District.

Robert was a sales engineer for A.P. Green Refractories. He then managed the boiler and compactor division of Atlas Welding of the Bronx. After the company was sold, he began a boiler and welding company of his own. He retired in 1988.

An engaging conversationalist on politics and current events, Robert also enjoyed reading. He took pleasure in spending time with his family, at his lakeside home, in the northern woods of Maine.

Robert Campbell Hayman was born on November 5, 1922 in Providence, Rhode Island and died April 7, 2007. He was 84. Robert was the last survivor of six children born to Robert Campbell and Eva Hayman. A resident of Tomkins Cove, NY for the past two years, he and his wife, Winifred, raised their family in the village of West Haverstraw, where they lived for 42 years.

At the time of his death, Robert was survived by his loving wife Winifred, of 54 years, and six devoted children; Robert married to Carole, Deborah Bleiwas married to Randy, Brion married to Eileen, Lisa Goodman married to Paul, Christopher married to Liz, and his youngest son James. Ten surviving grand children include; Robert and Christopher Hayman, Lorraine Bleiwas, Tara, Ryon and Deirdre Hayman, Justin and Kyle Goodman and Katie and Kelsey Hayman.

Robert was a pillar of strength and integrity and even the most casual of acquaintances long remembers his mild demeanor and warm smile. He will be sorely missed by friends and family.
