Walter Theodore Henriksen


Walter Theodore Henriksen was born on December 18, 1913, in Brooklyn, New York, to Karen Margrethe Larsen, age 27, and Thomas Gustav Henriksen, age 29.

In Rye his family lived at 86 Wappanocca St. and were members of Christ's Church. Walter was a graduate of Rye High School, class of 1931 and Springfield College.

Walter served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served on the Minesweeper USS Chaffinch (AM-81)

Assigned to the 3d Naval District, Chaffinch arrived at New York City 10 August 1941. For the next year and a half, alert to the mounting German submarine menace, she swept for mines and patrolled waters off New York and New London, Connecticut.

From 13 February 1943 until 8 January 1944, she performed similar duty off Newport, Rhode Island, under the 1st Naval District. Continuing her essential support to the movement both of coastwise convoys, and those bound for distant ports, Chaffinch again served at New York harbor until 1 August 1945

Walter retired a lieutenant commander of the U.S. Naval Reserves.

He married Miriam Adne Wayne on April 9, 1949, at the White Plains Baptist Church. The Rev. Charles O. Wright performed the ceremony in White Plains, New York. They had two children during their marriage.

After a wedding trip to Bermuda, the couple lived in Romona, N. Y. where he was recreation director of Happy Valley School.

Walter held many position, he was past president of the Spring Valley Rotary Club. He was former director of the Greer Woodycrest school in Pomona. Walter was past president of the Mid-Hudson unit of the Retired Officers Association and he would retire as director of a Rockland child care agency

Walter Henriksen: ex-child-care director died Saturday December 3,1988 in Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen, N.Y. He was 74.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Miriam (Wayne) of Tanager Road, Monroe; a son, Walter Jr. of Costa Mesa, Calif.; a daughter, Marit Henriksen of Greenwood Lake, N.Y.; and a sister, Lillian Henriksen of Rye.

Services were held at the First Presbyterian Church, Monroe, with burial at the Parma Union Cemetery, Parma, N.Y.
