Albert Jan Oudheusden

Albert Jan Oudheusden was born on December 31, 1926 in Semarang, Java, Indonesia, he was a son of Frances (Van Amstel) Oudheusden and Albert J. Oudheusden Sr. He had two brothers and one sister and were formerly of The Netherlands and The Netherlands West Indies until moving to Rye in 1942. In Rye the family lived at 389 Forest Ave.

Albert had studied abroad before coming to the United States and was a 1943 graduate of Rye High School. During World War II he served with the Royal Netherland Marines in Indonesia for two years.

Starting in 1943, the United States Marine Corps trained and equipped a new brigade, the Mariniersbrigade, of the Korps Mariniers at Camp Lejeune and Camp Davis in North Carolina in preparation for amphibious landings against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies.


The Japanese surrendered before such landings were needed, but the Mariniersbrigade, fully trained and equipped, left North Carolina in six transports in 1945 and fought against Indonesian insurgents in the Indonesian War of Independence.

Albert eventually would return to Rye, he graduated from Cornell University in 1949 with a B.S. in civil engineering. After his graduation he started his career with Bethlehem Steel Corp.

He married Jean Griffiths September 23,1950 in Douglasville, PA and they had two daughters.

He was promoted to engineer in the Research Department in 1959 and, from 1961 until 1963, he was a senior product and design engineer in the Research Department. He became an assistant chief engineer in the Corporate Engineering and Research Department in 1963.

Albert was an engineer and consulting engineer in the Corporate Engineering Department at Bethlehem Steel Corp. from 1969 until retiring in 1982 after 26 years of service.

A U.S. delegate to several International Standards Organization conferences, he was a past editor for The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and had several articles published in engineering journals. He held two patents in engineer bridge construction and composite steel deck.

He was a member of East Hills Moravian Church, Bethlehem, where he was a former president of the board of trustees and a former delegate to the Northern District Synod. He was active in Bethlehem YMCA membership drives.

Albert Jan Oudheusden, retired engineer of Salisbury Township died on April 9, 1989, at the age of 62 at Center Valley Leader Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was the husband of Elin (Drenchen) Oudheusden and the late Jean (Griffiths) Oudheusden.

At the time of his death, survivors included: Wife and mother; daughters, Helen, wife of Timothy O'Malley of Malvern, Chester County, and Frances, wife of Stanley Krazek of Allentown; brothers, Frank of Valhala, N.Y., and Marin of Westport, Conn.; sister, Mrs. Richard Schacklett of Mission, Kan.; daughter Erika, wife of Alan steelier of Quakertown; stepson, John Jakaboski, at home, and four grandchildren.
