Bernard Mulligan
Early Life
Bernard P. Mulligan was born on November 29, 1901, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Bernard Mulligan and Margaret McNamara. His father died while Bernard was still a child, leaving his mother to raise the family during his formative years.
By 1915, Mulligan was living in Rye, New York, at 35 Railroad Avenue, establishing his connection to the community at a young age. By 1918, he was residing in Manhattan at 1428 Lexington Avenue, reflecting the movement between New York City and Westchester that was common among working families of the period.
World War I Service
Mulligan entered military service on June 6, 1918, in Westchester County, New York, at the age of 16. He was inducted at Fort Slocum, a major mobilization and training center for troops during World War I.
He served in the United States Army as a Private and remained in service until April 19, 1919. His service was entirely stateside, and he did not serve overseas or participate in combat operations. His duties would have been associated with training and preparation during the final phase of the war.
He sustained no wounds or injuries during his service and was honorably discharged following demobilization.
Life After Service
Following his military service, Mulligan returned to civilian life in New York City. He married Mary Carney on August 31, 1924, in Brooklyn, and the couple established their home there. Although they had no children, they remained married for twelve years until her death in 1937.
He built a career in clerical and financial work, becoming a clerk and later serving as a chief clerk on the stock exchange, reflecting upward mobility within the financial sector during the interwar period. He resided in Brooklyn at addresses including 836 Washington Avenue and later 277 Eastern Parkway.
Bernard P. Mulligan died on May 7, 1968, in Flushing, Queens, New York, at the age of 66. He was buried at Long Island National Cemetery in East Farmingdale, New York.
