Domenick Salvatore

Early Life

Domenick Salvatore was born on April 2, 1896, in Barile, in the province of Potenza, Italy. He immigrated to the United States as a young man, arriving around 1914, and became part of the growing Italian immigrant community in Westchester County, New York.

By 1917, he was living at 81 Maple Avenue in Rye, New York, and working as a lamplighter for the Mitchell Lighting Company, a job that placed him within the essential public utility workforce of the period. His draft registration notes that he could not read English, reflecting the challenges faced by many recent immigrants adapting to life in the United States.

Although later in life he settled in Jersey City, New Jersey, his residence in Rye during the war years, along with his inclusion on the Rye World War I memorial plaques, confirms his recognized connection to the community.

World War I Service

Salvatore entered military service on May 27, 1918, when he was inducted in Westchester County, New York, into the United States Army. He was initially assigned to Company D of the 2nd Anti-Aircraft Machine Gun Battalion, a unit tasked with defending against enemy aircraft and supporting ground operations.

He was later transferred to Company G of the 52nd Pioneer Infantry Regiment, part of the American Expeditionary Forces. Pioneer Infantry units performed vital engineering and labor functions, including road construction, trench work, and logistical support, often operating close to the front lines under difficult and hazardous conditions.

Salvatore served overseas in France from August 2, 1918, to April 13, 1919, placing him in the theater during the final Allied offensives and the immediate post-Armistice occupation period. He served in the rank of Private and sustained no wounds or injuries in action.

He was honorably discharged on April 19, 1919.

Life After Service

Following his military service, Salvatore settled in Jersey City, New Jersey, where he built a large family and worked as a chef. He married Matilda (Tillie) Pace in 1920, and together they raised nine children over the following years.

He was a communicant of Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church and remained part of a close-knit Italian-American community throughout his life.

Domenick Salvatore died on April 29, 1958, at his home in Jersey City at the age of 62.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Matilda Salvatore; his children, including Carmela Riccardi, Jean Petrick, Marie Spatola, James, Gary, Shirley, and Guy Vincent Salvatore; fifteen grandchildren; his brother, Gerard Salvatore; and his sisters, Theresa and Josephine in Italy.
