Donald R. Altman was born on February 15, 1933. He lived at 41A Rye Colony with his parents, Irving and Hazel Altman, his younger brother James, and the family maid, Lucy Goodwin. His father worked as an editor. Donald, also known as Don, attended Rye High School, where he was an active participant in the intramural basketball team, Boy's Chorus, and the Photography Club. After graduating from Rye High School in 1950, Donald attended the New York State Agricultural and Technological Institute in Delhi, New York. Following his graduation from college, Donald joined the U.S. Army in November 1952. During the Korean War, he served with Company H, 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division.
