BIOGRAPHY

William R. Davenport

Early Life

William Rufus Davenport was born on May 10, 1884, in Taunton, Massachusetts, the son of William Church Davenport and Anne Fiske Banfield. He was raised in Taunton within a well-established New England family, receiving an education that emphasized academic achievement and preparation for professional life.

He attended Amherst College, graduating with the class of 1905, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Phi fraternity. His education and early social connections placed him within a network of individuals who would go on to careers in finance, business, and public life.

World War I Service

Davenport registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, listing his residence as Dogwood Lane in Rye, New York, and his occupation in banking with offices at 43 Exchange Place in New York City. At the time, he was employed by the Finance Forming Corporation, reflecting his position within the financial sector during a period when economic organization and capital management were critical to the national war effort.

There is no clear record of active military service or overseas deployment. Like many professionals of his background and age during the later stages of the war, Davenport’s contribution appears to have remained within the civilian sphere, supporting the wartime economy through financial and business activity rather than through uniformed service.

Life After Service

On May 22, 1919 William R. Davenport notified the Village Board that his name appeared on the soldiers and sailors honor roll and that it did not belong there, inasmuch as he had never been in army the or navy. He said that possibly it might be meant for his brother, Edward, in the navy, and suggested that the first name be changed. The matter was referred to Trustee Powers.

Following the war, Davenport continued his career in finance, becoming associated with the prominent investment banking firm Spencer Trask & Company in New York City. His work placed him within the upper ranks of the financial community during a period of significant economic growth in the 1920s.

He resided in Rye, New York, for approximately a decade, living on Grand View Avenue, where he became an active and prominent member of the community. During this time, he served as governor of the Apawamis Golf Club, reflecting both his social standing and civic involvement within one of Rye’s most distinguished institutions.

William Rufus Davenport died suddenly on May 11, 1928, at the University Club in New York City, one day after his forty-fourth birthday.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Alice Louise Demorest Davenport; his son, Demorest; his daughter, Alice Ann; and members of his extended family.

Funeral services were held at Christ’s Protestant Episcopal Church in Rye, followed by additional services in Taunton, Massachusetts. He was buried in Taunton, Massachusetts.

Record Commentary: Strong professional-class profile with clear distinction between military registration and civilian wartime contribution. Well-developed postwar financial career and community leadership in Rye elevate the narrative. Tier Rating: A-
