BIOGRAPHY Extended Information

Edward J. Langeloh

Early Life

Edward John Langeloh was born on March 7, 1898, in Greenwich, Connecticut, to John H. Langeloh and Ernestine Hamph Langeloh. He grew up in Rye, New York, where his family established roots in the community. He attended local Rye schools before continuing his education at Columbia University.

By 1918, Langeloh was living at 49 Brookdale Place in Rye and was enrolled as a student at Columbia University, reflecting both educational opportunity and upward mobility within the region.

World War I Service

Edward Langeloh was inducted into the U.S. Army on October 17, 1918, in New York, New York. He was assigned to the Students Army Training Corps (SATC) at Columbia University, a wartime program designed to train college students for military service while allowing them to continue their education.

He served as a Private within the program. Due to the timing of his induction late in the war, he did not serve overseas and saw no combat. His service reflects the rapid mobilization efforts undertaken in the final months of World War I.

He was honorably discharged on December 12, 1918.

Life After Service

Following his military service, Edward Langeloh returned to civilian life and became deeply involved in the civic and professional life of Rye. He initially worked as a contractor in New Rochelle before entering public service.

He served as building inspector for the City of Rye for 28 years, retiring in 1963. He was also highly active in community organizations, serving as secretary of the Rye Lions Club for 21 years, a member of the Rye Fire Department, and holding leadership roles in the Poningo Engine and Hose Company.

Edward J. Langeloh died on October 16, 1964, at United Hospital in Port Chester, New York, at the age of 66.

He was survived by his wife, Rose A. Larkin Langeloh; three children, John E. Langeloh, Robert H. Langeloh, and Rosemary E. Miner; three brothers, R. Fred Langeloh, George M. Langeloh, and Herman K. Langeloh; and three sisters, Elizabeth Hibdon, Helen Evans, and Minnie Henefield.
