Francis A. McQuade
Early Life
Francis Andrew McQuade was born on January 24, 1892, in Newark, New Jersey. By the time of his early adulthood, he had established himself in Rye, New York, where he lived at 311 Boston Post Road and worked as a school teacher in Public School District No. 3. His profession placed him within the educated working and civic class of the community during a period when Rye’s population included both long-established families and growing suburban institutions.
At the time of his World War I draft registration in 1917, he was single and reported that his widowed mother was dependent upon him for support. He was described as of medium height and stout build, with blue eyes and brown hair.
World War I Service
McQuade entered military service on June 24, 1918, having been inducted in Westchester County, New York. He was assigned to the 152nd Depot Brigade, a unit responsible for receiving, organizing, and training soldiers for service during World War I.
He was subsequently sent to the Camp Taylor Officers’ Training School in Kentucky, where candidates were prepared for potential leadership roles within the Army. His service remained stateside, and he did not serve overseas or participate in combat operations.
He served in the rank of Private and sustained no wounds or injuries during his military service.
He was honorably discharged on October 29, 1918, following the closing phase of the war.
Life After Service
Following his military service, McQuade continued his career in education, eventually becoming principal of the Jefferson School. He later resided in North Bergen, New Jersey, where he lived for approximately thirty-five years and remained active in both civic and professional life.
He retired from the school system in 1956 after a long career in education. He was a charter member of American Legion Post 33 and an honorary life member of Barrett Council Knights of Columbus No. 1273. He was also a longtime member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of North Bergen and Guttenberg, reflecting his deep involvement in community and civic organizations.
Francis A. McQuade died on November 23, 1968, at the age of 76 following a short illness.
Funeral services were held at the McCorry Brothers Funeral Home in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, followed by a high requiem mass at St. Joseph’s of the Palisades Roman Catholic Church in West New York. Interment took place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in East Orange, New Jersey.
