BIOGRAPHY Extended Information

Gerald J. Fitzgerald

Early Life

Gerald J. Fitzgerald was born about 1889 in Kilcolgan, Ireland, the son of James J. Fitzgerald and Ellen Murphy. He spent his early years in Ireland before immigrating to the United States, part of a broader movement of Irish immigrants seeking economic opportunity and stability.

He settled in Rye, New York, where he resided at 78 Purchase Street. Like many Irish immigrants in Westchester County, he became part of a working and upwardly mobile community that contributed significantly to the region’s development in the early twentieth century.

World War I Service

Fitzgerald enlisted in the United States Army on November 21, 1917, at Fort Slocum, New York, entering service during the rapid expansion of the Army for World War I.

He was assigned to several units within the United States Army Air Service, including the 152nd Aero Squadron, the 870th Aero Squadron, and later the 817th Aero Squadron.

He also trained at the Aviation Mechanics School at Kelly Field, Texas, one of the Army’s primary aviation training centers, where enlisted men were prepared for technical roles in aircraft maintenance and support.

These aero squadrons were part of the Army’s developing aviation system and were largely responsible for ground operations, including aircraft repair, supply, and airfield support. Their work was essential to enabling reconnaissance and combat flying operations, forming the backbone of the air service supporting the American Expeditionary Forces.

Fitzgerald was promoted to Corporal on April 12, 1918, and later returned to the rank of Private on July 18, 1918, reflecting the frequent personnel adjustments common within rapidly expanding aviation units.

His record indicates no overseas service and no wounds received in action. He was honorably discharged on January 18, 1919, upon demobilization.

Life After Service

Following the war, Fitzgerald returned to Rye, where he served as a member of the Rye Police Department, contributing to local public safety during the postwar period.

He later began a long career with the S. H. Graham Company of Rye, where he was employed for 37 years, becoming a well-known and respected figure in both Rye and Port Chester.

Gerald J. Fitzgerald died on September 24, 1945, at United Hospital following a stroke suffered while working.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Mabel Travis Fitzgerald of Port Chester, and his brother, James of Boston.

Record Commentary: Strong Air Service reconstruction with correct squadron lineage and Kelly Field training integration. Clear explanation of aviation support roles enhances an otherwise stateside record. Well-balanced immigrant and civic narrative. Tier Rating: A+
