BIOGRAPHY Extended Information

Harwood Magill

Early Life

Harwood Leland Magill was born on June 7, 1895, in West Stockbridge, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, to James H. Magill and Annie Lillian Neal. He spent his early years in Massachusetts, living in Richmond in 1900 and Hinsdale in 1910, before relocating to New York State during his youth.

By June 5, 1917, Magill was residing on Elmwood Avenue in Rye, New York, a town transitioning from a rural community into a suburban environment combining working-class residents and estate-based employment. He was employed as an architect student, reflecting early entry into a skilled professional field.

He was single at the time of his draft registration and was described as medium height and build, with grey eyes and brown hair. A registrar noted a prior operation on his left leg.

World War I Service

Magill was inducted into the United States Army on September 30, 1918, in Westchester County, New York. He was assigned to the 154th Depot Brigade, a training and processing unit responsible for organizing and preparing soldiers for active duty.

He later served with the Ordnance Department at Camp Meigs in Washington, D.C., where military equipment and supplies were managed and distributed. His role was logistical and administrative in nature.

Magill held the rank of Private. He did not serve overseas and was not engaged in combat operations. He sustained no wounds or injuries during his service and was honorably discharged on November 22, 1919.

Life After Service

On July 10, 1918, Magill married Helen Eliza Tousley in Saranac Lake, New York. They had three daughters: Helen Harwood (June) Magill, Katharine Tousley Magill, and Mary Lois Magill.

After the war, he lived in Rye and Port Chester, New York, where he worked as an architect. He later became a registered architect in New York State and contributed to the region’s development during a period of growth.

By the 1940s, Magill had moved to Fairfax, Virginia, and later worked in Washington, D.C., holding a U.S. Government Transportation Identification Card. He eventually settled in Connecticut.

His wife died in 1963 after 45 years of marriage. Harwood Leland Magill died on April 23, 1971, in Wallingford, Connecticut, at the age of 75.

He was survived by his daughters: Helen Harwood (June) Magill, Katharine Tousley Magill, and Mary Lois Magill.
