BIOGRAPHY Extended Information

Herbert A. Sherman Jr.

Early Life

Herbert Augustus Sherman Jr. was born on March 4, 1890, in New York City, the son of Herbert Augustus Sherman and Anna White. He spent much of his early life in Rye, New York, where his family resided, maintaining a long-standing connection to the community.

By 1917, he was living on Boston Post Road in Rye and working as a real estate broker and auctioneer, already established in business as a junior partner in a family firm with offices in New York City. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

World War I Service

Sherman entered military service on August 16, 1917, when he enlisted in the Regular Army at Fort Slocum, New York. He was initially assigned to the 153rd Depot Brigade, a training and processing unit responsible for preparing soldiers for service.

During his early service, he advanced to the rank of Corporal and then Sergeant in October 1917, reflecting strong performance and leadership potential. He was subsequently selected for officer training and attended the Officers’ Training School at Camp Dix, New Jersey.

Officer training schools established during World War I were designed to rapidly prepare qualified enlisted men and civilians for commissions, providing instruction in leadership, tactics, and military organization as the Army expanded.

On June 4, 1918, Sherman was discharged from his enlisted status in order to accept a commission, marking his transition from the ranks into the officer corps. There is no clear record of overseas service, suggesting that his wartime role was primarily within the United States during this period of training and organizational expansion.

He served without recorded wounds or injuries in action.

Life After Service

Following his military service, Sherman returned to his professional career in real estate, maintaining offices in both Rye and New York City. He remained active in business until his retirement in 1941.

He married Katherine Winchester in 1918, and the couple had two sons. He was active in civic and veteran organizations, including the American Legion Post in Rye, and was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in New London, Connecticut.

In later years, he relocated to Connecticut, where he spent the remainder of his life.

Herbert A. Sherman Jr. died on February 1, 1971, in Norwich, Connecticut, at the age of 80.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his sons, Winchester Sherman and Herbert A. Sherman; his sisters, Mrs. Herbert S. Lester, Mrs. Edward Planck, and Mrs. Theodore V. Sproull; and his grandchildren.
